Georges St. Pierre dominates Matt Serra April 2008 In a much anticipated mixed martial arts match-up on April 19, 2008 Georges St. Pierre dominates Matt Serra to clinch the UFC welterweight belt at UFC 83. A sold out crowd in Montreal's Bell Center was there to cheer on the Canadian fighter.
Canadian mixed martial arts fans were treated a match-up between two welterweights in the UFC. The Canadian Georges St. Pierre was heavily favoured to win the match and he did not disappoint. UFC 83 was the first UFC event held in Canada and it drew the largest crowd and was the fastest sell-out in UFC history bringing over 21,000 to the Bell Center. Prior the the event, the lineups circled nearly a full city block. There is little doubt that the MMA fan-base in Canada is large.
When the fighters were entering the arena, GSP was greeted with a loud cheerful ovation while Serra, the New Yorker, was greeted with boos. Although the fight was a title fight and scheduled for 5 rounds, the American only took 2 rounds of punishment from the Canadian before the referee stopped the contest.
From the opening bell, GSP dominated Serra by getting an early take-down and applying some ground-and-pound for the better part of the round. GSP's superior ground skills showed when he was able to out-wrestle Serra to keep Serra on his back while passing his guard at will. GSP was never in any danger from any submission attempts from the highly touted Brazilian Jiu-jitsu skills of Serra.
The second round was a virtual copy of the first in that Serra spend the majority of the time on his back and was thoroughly dominated by the Canadian. There was a brief stand-up exchange with GSP getting the better of the strikes but the fight ended when Serra, assuming a turtled position, was rescued by the referee who had seen enough.
